Economics

At Augustana, economics students study the economic way of thinking and explore its implications for understanding modern social organization.

Economics is a "way of thinking" about the organization of every aspect of social life. From an examination of the management of a household to international relations, economics emphasizes our interdependency in the face of scarcity and the mutually beneficial nature of the institutions we develop to coordinate our activities.

At Augustana, economics students study the economic way of thinking and explore its implications for understanding modern social organization. At the same time, students are reminded that there are boundaries to economics, and they are invited to look beyond those boundaries to evaluate the interaction between the economic approach and alternative ways of thinking about social life. This critical evaluation enables economics students to develop the judgment required to ensure that individual and social choices not only satisfy the preferences of society's members, but also contribute to their well-being and to the wise stewardship of the earth.

Economics grads are equipped with skills in economic research, critical thinking, and presentation (written and verbal, individual and team). Many will choose to enter the labour force or pursue further studies in business, economics, finance, law, international development, journalism or the management/ conservation of Canada's natural resources. Their undergraduate experience of economics in a liberal arts context will strengthen their ability to continue learning and developing in their particular career setting.
