Chiropractic
Augustana provides an excellent environment for a student to prepare for chiropractic school. Augustana's small class sizes allow students to have greater direct interaction with their university instructors than is possible at larger institutions.
The core curriculum at Augustana also ensures that pre-professional students are provided with the broad background in the liberal arts - natural and social sciences, humanities, and fine arts - required to deal with the public as professionals. A chiropractor's successful treatment of a patient requires a trust relationship which is fostered by tolerance and understanding arising from a diverse liberal arts foundation.
Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) is the only chiropractic school in Canada. Admission to Canadian Memorial requires a minimum of 90 credits (three full years) of university study. Within the 90 credits, CMCC recommends the inclusion of:
- 6 cr Biology
- 6 cr Organic Chemistry
- 3 cr Psychology
- 9 cr Humanities and/or Social Sciences
Most applicants to Canadian Memorial have a bachelor's degree; some hold graduate degrees. A typical first year in a prechiropractic bachelor's program at Augustana may include:
| AUBIO 110 and 130 - Evolution of Biological Diversity and Cell Biology | 6 cr |
| AUCHE 110 and 112 - General Chemistry I and II | 6 cr |
| AUPSY 101 - Basic Psychological Processes | 3 cr |
| AUENG 103 - Literature | 3 cr |
| AUSOC 101 or 103 - Introductory Sociology | 3 cr |
| AUSOC 105 - Social Anthropology | 3 cr |
| language | 6 cr |
| Total: | 30 cr |
Subsequent senior years would go towards fulfillment of the requirements for a biology or chemistry (or other) major and the core curriculum. See the current University calendar for details. Notice that Organic Chemistry (CHE 250 and 252) is a second-year course with a prerequisite of General Chemistry (CHE 110 at least); both Augustana and CMCC recommend that Organic Chemistry be taken in the second year.
